My grandpa used iodine crystals and a few drops of turpentine. Ever see indigo colored smoke? The turpentine hits the crystals and it fizzes away producing iodine-colored smoke as the reaction drives the iodine into the tissues. He said if it worked on dogs, cattle and pigs it'd work on kids. Hurt like heck, too, but we never got an infection from farm cuts and thorns and such. Grandma used Merthiolate. It worked, too, and didn't hurt or smoke.
