Mom used to make me eat peanut butter and Vick's Vaporub sandwiches when I had a cold. She also plastered me with the stuff and fed me cod liver oil. What can you say? It was the fifties. I'm just surprised I survived.

Reminds me of Granny Weatherwax from the Tiffany Aching books by Terry Pratchett. She was always using turpentine as a cure. :-/

You're lucky. My grandpa used iodine crystals and a few drops of turpentine. Ever see indigo colored smoke?

The turpentine hits the crystals and it fizzes away producing iodine-colored smoke as the reaction drives the iodine into the tissues. He said if it worked on dogs, cattle and pigs it'd work on kids.

Hurt like heck, too, but we never got an infection from farm cuts and thorns and such. Grandma used Merthiolate. It worked, too, and didn't hurt or smoke. SO when we got a cut or a small infection, we'd go to grandma first if we could.
