In the very early 70's there was lots of open, undeveloped beach and sand dunes on the shore south of Virginia Beach. You could see the bay even from the main drag down the middle of town as there were only a couple of hotels on the beach. We'd ride our motorcycles or drive our cars a little south of town and go off in the dunes and the beach and have cookouts. Gather driftwood and dig a pit in the sand, light it and cook hot dogs and s'mores and sit around the fire with guitars and sing pop songs badly. You could see the lights of the ships out on the bay after the sun went down. We'd roll out a blanket and sleep on the beach and the sun would be our alarm clock. We'd see few to no other people.

Went back two years ago. You cannot see salt water form the main drag anymore due to the hotels lining the beach. The old boardwalk is gone along with the quaint shops and arcades and the wooden palisade where there were roller skating and dances. The dunes and abandoned beaches south of town are now all lined with condos for frigging miles. The dunes are gone, dozed for the condos. The county actually had to pass and enforce a law to force the condo associations to have paths from the public roads to the public beach every 4th condo building or people could not get to the public beach for miles. The condo associations built what amounts to armored cage tunnels from the sidewalk to the beach past their armored spite fences between every 4th building.

The place is now officially ruint in my opinion. A plastic tourist trap and condo jungle. No more freedom, no more open beaches, no more sand dunes.

There are too many people in America these days, and too few places to relax. No wonder people "go postal".

Parts of the Oregon coast are amazing. but, yeah, as a New Englander I do not recall much pristine beachfront when I was growing up.

TMI, Blake.

The problem these days is finding a beach with no hotels or condos lining it, and not crowded with thousands of insane humans and their out-of-control kids.
