In the country there was no roller skating pavement except the county highway, but every winter the big pond froze solid. Later, when we moved to the city, I got a pair of those all-steel, clamp on, sidewalk skates Melanie sang about - they had a skate key to adjust them. After I learnt to roller skate on the sidewalks I was allowed to go to the roller rink on Friday or Saturday nights. After that came skateboarding - early 60s by then. We made our own skateboards using the old sidewalk skates we had outgrown by then. We did thunder runs by having one guy ride a bicycle and three or four hang on to a rope behind him on our skateboards. Then the bike guy would make a sharp turn and we all whip-cracked off and down the sidewalk or across the empty parking lot.
