We kids would use it as an excuse to raid the fridge and freezer, especially of ice cream. "But it'll go BAD if we don't eat it!". The use of candles was forbidden at all other times, and we found out that candles, without chimneys, blew out really easily, unlike in the movies. Mom and Dad had oil lamps and we'd get those out, and some gasoline Coleman lanterns as well. In the winter we'd stoke up the fireplace and we'd all sleep downstairs except my sister, who had the chimney go straight through her bedroom which kept it toasty. Wench. Cooking was no problem as our gas stove had pilot lights anyhow and needed no electricity at all to operate. In the summer, losing power sucked as it meant the fans would not work and that was a calamity for all us kids who slept upstairs. Yeah.
