@reynard61: There are lots more. Even the newer one, Chicago, was pretty good. Brigadoon, Amadeus, Gigi, Annie Get Your Gun, Pennies From Heaven,The Hope/Crosby “Road” series, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Lil Abner, Mary Poppins, the original Dr Doolittle, etc. Believe me, I can go on and on.

I grew up on them as mom and dad both liked musicals, and dad liked B-grade sci-fi/monster movies, too, so I love them, too.

@ War Pig: Um…Les Misérables?

Granted it has a few flaws (Russell Crowe was definitely miscast as Javert), but it pretty much measures up to any other Broadway-to-the-Silver-Screen effort in recent (and not-so-recent) memory music-wise.

I’ve promoted “The Music Man” to foreign exchange students, partly because it’s based in Iowa ;) but mostly because I consider it to be the best example of American Musical Theater. By that, I don’t mean that it’s the best musical ever (that honor goes to “Finian’s Rainbow”, according to the American Theatre Critics Association) but that it’s a good introduction to the art form.

And Christopher, LUV panel 2! Especially since I feel the same urge to sway to and fro whenever I listen to the music!

@War Pig: Me too! My non-verbal (but has perfect pitch when singing) autistic son absolutely loves them and watches all of R&H over and over again. Plus Mary Poppins, Guys & Dolls, and his latest favorite, The Music Man. ^_^

I miss the grand musicals of yesteryear. Oklahoma! Music Man, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, etc. Hollywood has lost its sense of scale.
