I know those very well! My first two dogs were a beagle and a basset, and their eyes were sad all the time, even when they were running outside or eating and smiling up a storm! Shar-Peis have all those wrinkles and yet _don't_ have a mobile face? Their faces are all movement! :-) And Ted needs a teddy bear to sleep! Especially Basset hounds and Beagles. My Shar-Pei could give me "the look" without changing expression (with those wrinkles it's hard to have a mobile face). She just changed the look in her eyes, somehow. She had several looks; sad/disappointed, forlorn, happy, hungry, love and in pain. Like all dogs, she could also smile and laugh.
