In about first grade (in San Diego) I saw a skywriter doing a WHITE RAIN ad, ran around the neighbors to get their wash off the line… *Sigh*

Modern skywriting is done with a towed array that puffs out jets of smoke as the plane flies straight and level. Sort of like a dot-matrix printer, except the dots run together to make solid letters and numbers. Not used often theses days as social media is far, FAR cheaper and reaches more people. For what it costs just to talk to the pilot you can reach a few million people with a social media campaign.

@Ronald, @Enth has it correct. If you look, the two planes are different models, and the 2nd one if our crew’s biplane. :)
