They had amber goggles and put a bluish film on the perspex (glass) of the cockpit and it simulated night flying in moonlight. The famous Dam Busters RAF squadron made excellent use of this, as did nighttime pathfinder Mosquito bombers of the RAF. Civil pilots still make some use of it, or did. With the advent of better and better flight simulators it fell into disuse for larger aircraft but our local pilots of personal propeller planes (such as Cessna single engines) still use it (with a pilot with no goggles in the copilot seat) to train for night flying and landing.
