With talking animals, it's not so much "keep him" as "invite him to become one of our roommates."

Strange that this reminds me of a former neighbor of some 50 years ago, but it has been my experience that severe Down Syndrome children (called Mongoloids back then) appear to have a bond with animals and get on well with them. Obviously Dee is not Down Syndrome, but she has many of the same good qualities. One of our neighbors had a Downs child, a little girl, and our dogs adored her. She'd come sit on our porch and the dogs would all run to her and lay about her to be petted, and they lapped it up like cream. One of our older dogs, a hound, wasn't fond of strangers, and the first time she came to our place he came up growling, but she reached for him, he sniffed her hand and shortly was wriggling all over like a puppy when she petted him. Anyone who tried to do her harm when our dogs were about would have been in SERIOUS trouble.
