I remember during storm watcher's training (I was a ham radio operator) they showed us some things to watch out for, in addition to tornadoes. Specifically, lightning. They showed us a picture someone had taken of their friends when they were all visiting an overlook. The sky was mostly cloudy, certainly not completely overcast, and not raining at all. The picture showed this man and woman, facing the camera and grinning like idiots while their hair was spread out around their heads in what is clearly a static electricity pattern. Less than a minute after the photo was snapped, lightning hit the two people. They survived.

Another story was about something that had happened about 30 miles away the previous year. The guy was a storm watcher and his girlfriend had been out in the countryside with other storm watchers reporting on a small tornado. The tornado passed and everything had calmed down, and people were standing outside their cars comparing notes, when lightning struck the girlfriend. She was knocked down and was unconscious for a minute or two, but then got up none the worse for wear. 15 minutes later they were racing for the University hospital because she was screaming in agony. When the lightning passed through her it burned her internally along the paths of her nerves. They had to induce a coma until she had healed enough that she wasn't in constant agony.

That being said, controlling lightning would be SUCH a cool superpower! Forget flying or invisibility! I want the ability to smite mine enemies and those people who steal my parking spots!

I totally went out in lightning storms throughout my life and haven't been struck... yet. That's my anecdotal statistical evidence! ;D

And don't feel badly, Christopher, my brain always wants to spell it lightening! And it does cause temporary lightening in the sky, so thereyago! ^_^

Please tell me that "lightning"/"lightening" isn't another one of those lost linguistic battles like "alternative"/"alternate" (it's an alternative universe, folks...) :-(

Don't be ridiculous. Clearly Vachel isn't crazy enough to go out into a lightning storm until it is lightening.
