Since I haven't lived much in the English-speaking world, for me croquet is "a game where hedgehogs are hit by flamingos, and which has nothing to do with cricket."

My brother and I and some friends used to play "combat croquet" on the little league baseball field in the local town park when the little league season was over. Back in the late 60s and early 70s. It was a combination of croquet, what would later be called Calvinball (long before Calvin and Hobbes), softball, polo, tackle football and general insanity. It took up the whole field including the outfield. Highly unstructured and the rules were changeable as whomever had the ball/s in hand could declare a rule. Lots of fun, exhausting and usually rough in the bruise and scrape meaning of rough. There could be more than one ball in play at any time, too. Croquet balls mostly but also the odd softball or even basketball. You can send a basketball a ways out there with a good whack from a reinforced croquet mallet. We brought along odds and ends that were handy to add to the game. Hula Hoops, water balloons, burlap sacks, flags on sticks, the odd football helmet, old socks, bandanas to be used as blindfolds, a cup of fishing worms, a bale of hay or straw, a bushel basket of corncobs, firecrackers, you name it. One kid brought a pony one time but it got spooked and ran off back to the pasture 2 miles out of town with the kid on its back hanging on for dear life so he never brought it again. Old, beat up bicycles, three wheeled ATVs (before they became illegal), scooters, wheelbarrows - you name it, we used it, Whatever was brought had to be somehow worked into the game if we could think of a way and we usually did.

Since we didn't have 500 TV channels and video games to rot our brains and turn us into couch potatoes, we made our own fun. The games lasted several hours, usually from lunch until suppertime and sometimes they carried on from supper till dark.

Small wonder we all ate like starving wolves yet were as thin as rails.
