The comment about human consomme reminds me of an old sci-fi movie where the crew of a spaceship are on an unfamiliar planet, and they are happy to find a “human restaurant”, until they see the menu.

While not quite vegan myself (eggs are consumed in this house, we call it our regular dose of Cholesterol) I’m very close to being one. However, I have found that being “judgmental” about it just made the carnivores in my vicinity even more defensive.

I still reply with a comment about “vulture food” (thank you, Chris) whenever anyone jibes me about “rabbit food.”

When I lived in South Florida, in the agricultural area, trucks loaded with eggplants or summer suash would often lose some when they hit bumps. I called them veggie roadkill, and had no qualms about eating them!

“inhabitants of Vega IV LIKE human consommé,” seems to imply that vegans like to either eat stew made of humans, or like to eat human urine.

Anyhow, please don’t trash vegans here. I’m one, if you didn’t know.

I remember making saitan last year during my daughter’s quest to convert me to veganism (didn’t work — for one thing, she decided she couldn’t make it through Sunday without my ham-’N-veggie omelet, for another, it turns out that inhabitants of Vega IV LIKE human consomme) (but that’s another story).

I found it very flavorful and enjoyable. You should also know that it’s pronounced “say-TAN”, like a particular demonic entity trying to sound fancy. I got raised eyebrows from my religious friends and comments like, “Oh? And you served it with brown rice Ba’als, did you?”

In case anyone doesn’t know (like I didn’t until less than a minute ago), “seitan” is wheat gluten. So Ted basically means worms made out of bread dough. The idea that Ted would have such an item around seems a bit peculiar in itself.
