One name: Edgard Varèse.

If you're going to join the "noise as music" crowd, you might want to listen to works like Ionisation, Hyperprism, and Poème électronique. (A work for electronic tape written several years before the Doctor Who theme.)

After all these years of Noise Art, I am kind of surprised anyone's fuses are blown by Lachenmann. Where have they been?

Everything can be inherently musical. The art is identifying the music & drawing it out so that others can also appreciate it. This is easier on a device designed to sound musical than it would be on something, like say a bicycle or a stack of oddimentia.

Frank Zappa, BTW, got his start playing bicycles.

Every year I get students in their second or third year of musicology simply staring in shock and disbelief as they listen to the music of Helmut Lachenmann for the first time.

Every. Single. Year.
