I wish I could find the citation, but I remember watching the opening. It was only much later that I read the story behind the opening and why the audience roared with laughter at the joke the emcee made. Apparently, a few minutes before the opening, a lighting director called for a change in one of the lights. The show was being broadcast live, so an 8:00 opening meant the cameras when live at 8:00, rain or shine. There was only a 5 second delay to drop audio on "inappropriate language". So the lighting director sent a minion up to the lighting frame to change a light. While running along the track, the minion tripped and grabbed a rope to steady himself. This set off a chain of events that had the entire crew running around the stage in chaos, trying to clear things up before the cameras went live. At 7:59:55 (5 second delay, remember?), the cameras went live nationwide to the orchestra playing the opening theme, the announcer doing the voiceover, the audience applauding, and the stage filled with minions dashing about. As the applause died down and the minions finally got the last errant curtain back into place, the emcee stood at the microphone and announced that for a finale, they were going to set Lucille Ball on fire.
