More importantly, they bite back. Growing up, we only had green olives (with pimentos) in our fridge. I was in college before I learned to eat black olives because they don't taste like green olives. The father had a third one with great enjoyment -- and the boy burst into tears. "What's wrong, son?" the astonished father asked. The boy blubbered, "You're getting all the good ones!" I always liked the story about the father who wanted his young son to appreciate black olives the way he did.

If y'all think that you dislike commercially available olives, then you absolutely do not wish to try them fresh from the tree. There are things which still make me wonder how people discovered they were food, olives are on that list.
