A friend's sister is currently being taken advantage of in this way. She's been made a 'project director' but doesn't have a team, no direct reports, nothing but the responsibility to keep things on track. She frets at people and gets the work done that they can't do... and I realized that her management has realized she lacks the inner guidance to form her own productive force, so they're using her manic energy to keep people in line and tasks on track. She's more a border collie than a project leader, but not as conscious of her role as the dog would be. Sobering. I'm not sure if I admire the way she's been put to use more than I am horrified.

If you want productivity then get someone who is both lazy & responsible. Give 'em a task & they will responsibly set down to do it, but make it as quick & as easy as they can, so that they can get back to web surfing.

That's true. Maybe productivity was the wrong word. It heightens their activity, which may or may not even be productive. :)

Workaholism does not always heighten productivity. Many workaholics will expand work activities uselessly or even destructively in order to have more to do.
