The cost per solicitation, counting the expense of a laptop, an e-mail account and the mass e-mailer, is about US$0.0001. An investment of as little as US$100 produces one hundred million e-mails like this. The expenses can be made back with just one sucker’s hit.

That doesn’t mean the spammers aren’t getting lazier anyway. Oh no. Today I received five letters all with the same title: “>>Username<<, Jenny26 wants to meet you!" Sheesh.

It used to require a cargo train, heavy equipment, semi trucks, hundreds of co conspirators and the ability to hold off the police of several states for a couple of days in order to steal the records of a few million people, as they were all paper.

Now it merely takes a thumb drive, a laptop, a McDonald’s WiFi hotspot and a few minutes.

Ah, yes. Remember the good old days, when spammers had to write out their pyramid or phishing schemes on paper, or a typewriter? You used to have to put some effort into your illegal activities — stamps and envelopes, patiently wait for correspondence (which might never come) to travel back and forth, then organize it into folders and file boxes to keep track of which letters were going to where and how long it had been between contact dates.

Now it’s all just cut and paste, sending out a million emails at once, getting your dozen or so bank numbers by the next day and then immediately turning them into credit cards and online withdrawals of whatever cash is instantly available.

There’s no real artistry or effort in identity theft anymore.

There was a time when I was the only one in my circle who had NOT been contacted by a Deposed Royal and asked to help transfer money to this country.

I felt kind of jealous.
