On a sad note, legendary Roller Derby player and hall of fame member Charlie O’Connell has died.

I watched him play when I was a kid. My family moved to LA when dad was transferred to the Rocketdyne plant during the moon shot program. I quickly became a fan of roller derby on the independent channels. Sometimes I'd listen to the Spanish language broadcast for fun. A legendary Bay City Bomber, he was built like a linebacker but was a fantastic skater. One person claimed that he had skated the equivalent of twice around the world in his career. In person, he'd pick up three or four good-looking gals and skate with them sitting on his shoulders and hanging onto his back and front while he skated laps. Immensely strong in real life, but a teddy bear off the track. He always had time for young fans.

So long Charlie.
