I've had little pumpkins stuffed with lamb, a little ground pork (tasted sort of like sweet Italian sausage) cheeses, spices and veggies. They were smallish ones, just right for one person. Each got a half pumpkin. Delicious. I ate it when I was visiting an Amish family buying a garden/storage shed, or rather, dickering price to have one made on site for me.

They won the negotiations. I can't negotiate on a full belly. Maybe that was the plan. Sneaky Amish. Great food, although their jams are way too sweet for me.

I recognized onion, parsnips, and scallions in the mix. The 40-something wife had mad knife skills and the dice was perfect. The men thought I was a little odd as I was interested in the cooking. I suppose in Amish families the wife/mother does all the cooking. Lamb or mutton (unsure which) instead of ground beef or all pork was a very refreshing change. I seldom eat lamb or mutton as it's not easy to find here without having an Amish family kill and butcher a whole one for you. I prefer it as an occasional treat.

I imagine you could use acorn or even butternut squash (butternut squash would be real small) as well as small pumpkins. Normally the Amish sell those little pumpkins for Thanksgiving/Halloween decorations.

Pumpkin smoothies sounds good. Alternately, you can ask Daniel or Matthew to post something on Stuffed Pumpkins over at Cookrookery. Now THERE'S a treat!

In England there are cheese rolls. people roll a full round of cheddar, or something like that, down a hill to win money. But my favorite is the tomato fight held annually in Spain.
