I read my grandmother's diaries she left us when she passed on. In November 1950 (just before I was born), Ohio had the Great Snow. It snowed and drifted so deep that my grandfather had to tunnel out to the barn to care for the livestock. They got 40 inches of standing snow but the hurricane force winds of the blizzard (over 80 mph sustained) caused massive drifts many feet tall. That was over Thanksgiving. It stayed very cold and snowed off and on, with a grand total of accumulated snow of something like 5 standing feet, with drifts sometimes reaching 12 feet in height. Then in January of 1951 it got up to 72 degrees, the snow melted off and it caused a flood. Go figure. I have been helping grandpa plowing the 1960s and at one end of the field I got soaked and he was in sunshine at the other.
