Papaw S.H. (dad’s dad) could blow enormous smoke rings when he smoked his pipe on a calm day or indoors. Blow rings within rings, and he could whistle and hum at the same time. He also could spot mint anywhere for us to chew. Papaw O.M. (mom’s dad) could pull a dime out of your ear and give it to you, or make a paper rabbit or something else appear out of his fedora after handing it to you to be sure nothing was in there. He. also knew where to get bubblegum that really tasted just like Coca-Cola.

I had a fun childhood.with two ornery, magical grandfathers and equally fun grandmothers, and an assortment of aunts and uncles in the same vein.

I used to pull quarters (inflation) out of my grandson’s ear when he was little and he loved the trick. I bought a book on amateur magic and practiced it to amuse him.
