@Ronald, i have often cited that as a basis for humor (and a lot of good writing), having characters stuck in their nature.

Though I like to point out that (in how I've heard it) that the scorpion convinces the fox (or turtle or whatever) "Of course I wouldn't sting you, then we'd BOTH drown."

Because not only are we stuck with our nature, we're generally unaware of it. :)

It's from Star Trek: Voyager, "Scorpion, Part One." I don't know the precise fable name, but it's the one where a scorpion persuades a fox to let it ride on the fox's back across a river, despite the obvious concern that the scorpion will sting the fox. And the scorpion does so, in the middle of the river, so obviously the fox will die and sink.

""Why did you do that?" asked the fox. "Now you'll die too.""

""I couldn't help it," said the scorpion. "It's my nature.""

>>>Vachel hurts his wing and the alligator carries him across on his back, and vachel STILL can’t help but be his usual insulting self.

""I couldn't help it," said the scorpion. "It's my nature...""

[ points for recognizing the reference on one or more levels ;-) ]

@War Pig, lol!See, there's a second week of strips that could have come out of today's strip. Vachel hurts his wing and the alligator carries him across on his back, and vachel STILL can't help but be his usual insulting self.

Sigh. Sometimes I miss creating Dee. :-/

Yeah, @Ronald, it does come up occasionally. it was a fun theme to lightly touch on VERRRY occasionally to punctuate a situation. :)

I noticed that came up a few times now and then, that Blake considers the household (cavehold?) his "pack."

There is an old saying from Haiti; "Never insult the alligator until AFTER you have crossed the river."
