More than once I’ve looked at library stacks and wonder if one fell over would it be like dominoes. Glad I’ve never seen it played out.
The ones that would worry me are the moving stacks, with a big wheel on the end, so they can compress out the aisles until needed. Or electric motors with buttons. If you’re in there when they go wrong, you’d sure come out looking funny.
In earthquake country, I screwed 2×4s across the tops of our bookcases on either side of my computer table, and the rest to the wall studs and each other.
But whenever I go in Smart & Final, I look at the liquor shelves and see One Expensive Earthquake when it happens.
Chris, might be time to update the appearance sked…
If you’ve ever seen “The Mummy” (1999) there’s a wonderful depiction of just that. The librarian’s ultimate nightmare.
As a Librarian I can tell you, it is a mess when it happens. Depending on the type of shelves and if they are braced from above, it does goes down as one would expect.
