   Nice artistic touch that Russell is clearly following the conversation: In Panel 2 he’s looking at Ted, in Panel 4, at Vachel.

   It’s an old theater trick. Extras (in my experience) were taught to look interested in whoever was speaking (unless they had specific reason otherwise), which makes the audience more interested “whuz he lookin’ at?”

   Not to mention that Ted is big enough and naturally armed enough to eat the bully ram in about four bites. Then pick his teeth with Vachel.
