It’s not often you get to use “bereft”
I, too, often feel the same way when leaving the big cities, and will sometimes take three showers in a day to get the stench off me. Oh, the smell of urine in the streets and alleys; the immortal funk that pervades the entire city like a cloud! I’d rather drive past a large hog farm on a hot and humid July day than a big city at any time of the year. Depression, an almost tangible gray doom, seems to inveigle a big city the way fog does London. Small wonder the city crime rates soar above the rural rates. People have had their souls eroded by the gangrene of big city life.
The really big hog farms bring funk to a SuperFund level, but I’m glad the Duck Farm next to the 605 in the San Gabriel Valley is now gone. It was at a comparable level, and at the wrong time of day, even at freeway speeds (non-’rush’-hour), no amount of air-conditioning and fresheners did any good.
There really needs to be a limit to the scale of these things, set against ‘economies of scale’!
