This originally was going to be bear#2 with the punchline, before Vachel was replaced and Ted became the solo bear.
I also just love how kids can get so caught up in the moment like that. I mean, try tickling an adult and you can often reach the same place, but perhaps with them being less amused. :)
I LOVED stick racing as a kid. Because it all involves watching and shouted commentary, and there’s no action aside from saying “ready set go” and dropping the sticks. How fun is that?!
I was really proud of the art in this one. The different perspectives as well as the stone-work in panel 2.
I think my favorite part of this strip is Vachel’s slow sink into the vase. He doesn’t climb in, or jump in, he just kinda sits in it and sinks down.
I don’t know why that has always amused me so much.
Like yesterday, Ted again shows his inexperience in taking care of a small child.
And I’m not sure if Vachel is being helpful, or simply making fun of Ted’s error. Probably both. :)
A lot of the early strips were about Dee getting into unfortunate or odd circumstances, and the animals reacting to it.
In fact, in response to an early syndicate submission, an editor mentioned that a good number of the strips involved her being airborne, usually falling. Duly noted! Lol. :)
This is one of the first strips I’m putting up for sale which somehow wasn’t put up in the first run (perhaps I was too attached to it)
I love her hand prints on his jacket. :)
Sometimes with a kid you have to be very specific.
At first, i was going to draw Blake in human clothes as a disguise as well. And then I realized that would be not make any sense. As much sense as a bear and vulture in clothes. It’s all perspective.
Ted’s outfit still makes me smile.
