I was never sure if this joke was completely clear, that it was Ted’s buoyancy created from pastries (among other things) which caused them to float.
Either way, it’s the tense moment along with Vachel’s nonchalant comment int he first panel which makes this strip for m.e

I know, I know. How horrible, I keep reeling from the numbers. Hard to think of them as anything BUT numbers, but they are not, they are people, with lives.
And unlike in Little Dee, it doesn’t end with lemonade.
Too bad the entire Japanese population didn’t eat more pastry. Maybe they could have held on and floated the entire island atop the wave. But as you said, it doesn’t end on a nice note. Funny, but a month ago that strip would have been merely cute. I suppose timing (in your case accidental) really is everything.
