Vachel can be mean for his own insensitive amusement, but I sometimes wondered if this strip went too far. I always justified it in thinking that in this case it’s NOT that he’s this mean, it’s just one of those moments when he REALLY wasn’t thinking.
Nope, he’s enjoying himself WAY too much in the last panel. Vachel smiles at devilment.
Which is why Ted is worried.
The thing is, why does he seem to despise Blake so much? Blake is harmless, helpful, etc. and would do what was necessary to protect his pack, which includes Vachel.
Hum, I took it that Blake just assumed that Vachel was being a jerk and went out thinking the worst. I mean a vulture would tend to see things in a body floating on a stick of driftwood, wouldn’t he?

I never took this strip as Vachel MEANT to make Blake paddle all the way into the ocean — more that he was sharing his real thoughts and was so detached from the scene that he watched Blake go without saying anything and then wandered off highly amused.
I’m amused!
