This strip came out of me wondering: a full audience standing and applauding is a “standing ovation,” .. or is it? How many people do you NEED exactly before it is?
Ovation (noun): a victory procession less glorious than a triumph, awarded to a Roman general. Specifically, the cheers and rejoicings of the public as the the general and his men march past
Depends on how you measure the ratio of enthusiasm and general satisfaction of the audience to its size. If it’s a small child who really really loves the story, then I would probably take that over a full house of polite applause.
Just sayin. :)
The first time I read it I thought Vachel might have heard “A standing O, Vachel, it brings tears to my eyes.” But I got it the second time.
I was surprised to realise that it was a word I couldn’t define satisfactorily, and my first thought was that it presumably had nothing to do with ova.
OK, I’m worrying myself now.
At least it wasn’t a “standing ovulation”!
