We all knew which houses in our trick-or-treat area gave out “healthy snacks” or toothbrushes (evil dentists), from one year to another, without forgetting, even though it may have been a new family doing it. We were cool with fruit like apples and bananas or raisins, but come on, frigging TOFU BARS? Oughta be a law against that. There was one older lady who passed out homemade popcorn balls and they were delicious. Later, when I was in charge of my siblings and too old to go myself, she’d still give me one to eat as I took the kids around.
These days I give candy to the kids and have coffee and hot dogs for the parents. We set up the gas grill and make the dogs as we need them and have a 32 cup coffeemaker, along with napkins, catchup, mustard, wax paper for the dogs in buns and Styrofoam cups for the coffee. I generally get upwards of three hundred kids, and almost a hundred parents or older siblings on escort duty. Even the cops stop by as they patrol the streets on beggar’s night for dogs and joe. Good thing I belong to Sam’s Club for the dogs and buns and cups.
That sounds like an excellent idea, and I wish I had the available funds to do the same! Another Halloween idea that was really popular (with one guy anyway) was to give away comic books.
