Or: “Object Lesson”
I learned too often, especially in high-school, that being more clever often does count for much.
Same for me in USMC boot camp. I went through in the “Full Metal Jacket” days. R Lee Ermey was actually a DI when I was in boot, but I never saw him there. Boot camp was pretty much just like that, too. That part of it was very real, except for a recruit like Pyle managing to lay hands on a full magazine of live ammo, that is. No way. Not in them days.
My smart mouth got me into plenty of trouble, but sometimes it was just too good of an opportunity to pass up. DIs can be great straight men, ya just gotta have the brassies to speak up and take the consequences.
Well, come on, that’s just MEAN, even for Vachel. Are we really supposed to sympathize with him there?
School of hard knocks.. ;-)
Hmmm… I can imagine Vachel thinking this one through, albeit rather more swiftly than anyone else would do: Tenure? Vultures don’t *get* tenure!
