I have more than once felt sorry for the broken look I’ve seen in teachers’ eyes.
I know that look.
Blame it on whoever it was who wrote the course catalog. “Digging Graves” would have been only one character longer and would have been immeasurably clearer than “Grave Digging”. It’s like the student at the “English as a Second Language” class who had a difficult time understanding that, in English, a “house cat” is immeasurably different from a “cat house”.
Having students of such poor caliber is what eventually drove my mother out of teaching. That, and being 88.
I have often had that look. I remember giving an hour long lecture on NOT using the Internet to do an assignment and then being told, later, by 3 students that they didn’t use the Internet; they used the Web.
“…they didn’t use the Internet; they used the Web.”
