The second panel is what I based the cover of Little Dee Book #1 on. When I came to design the cover, I went through all the strips for the book, and used the panel I visually and emotively loved best.
But I’ve always had a deep nostalgic love for autumn, so it is no surprise. :)

Autumn is my favorite time of year. Especially October. Usually nice weather, the light’s flat, the colors are great, most of the crops are in before Halloween so you can see further from the road. Temps are cool, nights nippy – perfect sleeping weather. Then of course there’s pumpkin pie season and Halloween. We decorate like mad and buy well over a hundred bucks in candy every year.
I love making pumpkin pie, and it always tastes so much better than the restaurant or bakery versions. Then it is also hunting season, and you can add fresh, wild game to your diet. Few things better than roast boar or squirrel gravy. Kite flying is also great in autumn, and flying them with kids or (now for me) grandkids is a treat. The last of the berries are sweetening, the gourds and squash and pumpkins are ready to be picked; and in Ohio, we have the Pumpkin Show in Circleville. The Best Damn Band In The Land (the Ohio State University Marching Band is going to lead the parade this year. The winner of the biggest pumpkin last year set a record at (I kid you not) 1,635.5 pounds.
@chris: You probably did this when the leaves started falling back in 2004. I’ve been wondering, did the leaves on the same day this year?
BTW yes, panel 2 is beautiful.
@Warpig: Your post first made me hungry, but now I can’t think of anything but Cinderella.
@War_Pig, I am SO moving to Ohio. That sounds lovely. Okay, not really, but DANG I miss real autumns. Seattle has autumn, and its nice, but it’s not as much a season as a general undefined shift.
@Frank, well, I wrote that when in Seattle. I did not base it on the actual weather (or perhaps I did, using a webcam, I have vague memories that I might have). But I grew up in Massachusetts, and so I knew the general time to have the leaves fall. :)
Panel one: comma splice.
Tisk tisk.
