I think drawing Robin Hood in Little Dee, combined with my silly desire for general wealth redistribution, inspired my Halloween costume a couple years after this strip ran.
So where’s Dee herself during this?
Personally, I don’t believe in forced wealth redistribution. They tried it in Russia, Eastern Europe, etc. Didn’t work. You worked, you earned it, you keep it. I’d like to go back in time and strangle those dastardly poltroons who proposed the 16th Amendment.
Actually you do a passable Errol Flynn…
You have to go much farther back since the 16th Amendment didn’t create the income tax, no matter what poor history teaching might have said. We had an income tax at the start of the nation and then again at the Civil War onward.
it just codified that a tax on ANY source of income was not a direct tax and thus didn’t come under the Article I restrictions; from 1895-1913, tax on income from property or property-like (derivatives and such) were deemed direct taxes and thus subject to the Article I restrictions… but taxes on income such as wages were already deemed allowable and had been since the founding.
And do you know what the big argument of the time was? Whether or not the income tax would ever rise to 1/40th of a cent per dollar!
The power to tax is the power to destroy, as we are seeing.
Oops, I didn’t mean to start a political debate. Some of you are against taxes, some are for increased taxes. And all is okay in the world. :)
