One of the most difficult things when you offend someone is that they are often not in the mood to help clarify precisely what you said wrong.
Especially little kids and their drawings. A tree and a lollipop are indistinguishable in most kids’ drawings, even in color. Horses and dogs are pretty close, too. Get them wrong and the kid pouts. And asking them what it is, is no better. they get miffed if you don’t know what it is on sight.
I agree; kids can be very sensitive that way. How about “”Nice! Tell me about your picture.”
