   When my two were little, a long time ago, I had to read; “This is the House That Jack Built” first, every night. I had to start slow and get faster with each verse, and if I fouled it up (frequently, as I went faster) they’d laugh and I’d have to start over. Then they chose a short story from the books to read, not boring, not exciting. I always finished with “Goodnight, Little Bear” and that would get them sleepy and ready to head to cloud nine. In fact, when my elder daughter was married and very pregnant with my grandson, if she could not sleep, I had to walk over to their place (a block over and a block up) and read her the same stories. Put her out like a light. Even my younger daughter would, when ill or having a bad day in college, call me and have me read her the “Goodnight Little Bear”. I started all over with my grandson, but now he’s a hulking teenage football lineman at 6′3” and 204 pounds, with nearly 17-inch biceps. I’ll have to wait a few more years for great-grandchildren, I guess.

   I pick a ridiculous number, like 6,888, and count backwards until I fall asleep. When I start losing my place, I know it’s working ;-)
